BREEAM sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation and has become one of the most comprehensive and widely recognised measures of a building's environmental performance. It covers the complete range of built structures, from schools and factories to prisons. Residential dwellings are covered by the Code for Sustainable Homes.
Where a suitably qualified ecologist has been appointed the actual number of surveyed and specified plant species (before and after construction) must be used to calculate the change in ecological value.
Only native floral species or those with a known attraction or benefit to local wildlife can be considered for the purpose of enhancing the ecological value of the site.
A plant species mix developed over 20 years to give maximum benefit to pollinating insects clearly achieves this target - cheaply, quickly and without the need for intensive aftercare.
Additional credits under Section LE 04 - Enhancing site ecology - can be achieved by appropriate habitat creation, though this can be expensive to carry out successfully and will generally require significant aftercare.
BREEAM uses plant species richness as an indicative measure of ecological value of the assessed site and therefore an indication of ecological impact resulting from its development. The ecological value is expressed as an area weighted average of plant species richness for a site's broad habitat types.
